1/1/25 : Did Ya Know - 100+ IP by the Decades (Phillies Minor Leagues)

Pitching one hundred or more innings in a minor league season is often regarded as a milestone in regard to player development. Showing the ability to go further into games as a starter establishes a baseline that can carry into the major leagues if the player reaches that level. It’s primarily starting pitchers that join the 100+ IP club however bulk or multi inning relievers have also gotten there.

Frequency is the catch term - I reviewed 75 years of Phillies minor league data (baseball reference) to ascertain how often Phillies minor league pitchers reached or eclipsed 100 innings in a season. The findings may surprise some. Following I have  presented the summarized data by decades and then also by year. Note that I used data of actual IP therefore it will include the infrequent count of position players who took the mound for mop-up innings as well - that doesn’t skew the numbers in a significant manner.

The 1950’s saw multiple classifications of minor leaguer play, roster sharing with co-operative agreements with other organizations and no formalized structure (the current A thru AAA structure didn’t begin till 1963). The Phillies employed players on eight to twelve teams during the decade with an average of 115 pitchers used per season. On average 50 pitchers per year reached the 100+ IP mark with a total of 102 pitchers throwing 200 or more innings in a season. The median average for IP for those in the 100+ club was 156 meaning that about 25 pitchers per year threw more than 156 innings.

In the 1960’s a more formalized minor league structure began (1963) - the Phillies had a range of seven to eleven (1960) teams per season - some still of the co-op variety. The Phillies averaged using 98 pitchers per season in the minor leagues with an average of 34 per season joining the 100+ IP club. There was a significant drop off of pitchers who threw 200 innings or more with that total falling to 29. The median average for IP for those in the 100+ club was 141 meaning that about 17 pitchers per year threw more than 141 innings.

From 1970 to 2009 there was a general consistency of numbers - during those 40 years an average of 19 pitchers per season ranging from 16 (1972) to 26 (1977) reached the 100+ IP club. Only 8 pitchers threw more than 200 innings in a season with Brandon Duckworth in 1998 being the last Phillies minor leaguer to do so - no one has even come close since 2005 when a pitcher hurled 196.1 IP.  The Phillies averaged using 86 pitchers per season over this time period in the minor leagues ranging from 71 in the 70’s to 120 in the 2000’s. The average IP and the median average amongst those in the 100+ IP club was 141 (the same number as the median average during the sixties). With the median average at 141 and the average number of pitchers per season at 19 there were about 9 pitchers per season over 141 IP. The organization generally had seven or eight teams per season in the minor league during this time frame including short season squads.

The 2010 to 2019 decade saw a slight drop off in average pitchers per season reaching the 100+ IP club with the number at 16 ranging from a low of 11 (2019) to a high of 21 (2011). The average number of pitchers used per season climbed to 158 which is significant as the organization generally had eight teams in the minors each season including short season squads - finding innings for everyone became more challenging. The average IP amongst those in the 100+ IP club was 128. With the median average at 128.1 and the average number of pitchers per season at 16 there were about 8 pitchers per season over 128.1 IP.

The pandemic had far reaching effects, one being the cancellation of the 2020 minor league season. Multiple folks in pro baseball development have told me that the lost 2020 season impacted the next two seasons of play as players programs were altered to build back the lost time with a gradual build up. I think that the data for the years from 2021 to 2024 are reflective of that - only one minor league pitcher reached the 100+ IP club for the Phillies in 2021 as an example. It’s skewed the data as a comparison to the prior years however 2024 reflects a bit of a return to the pattern with 10 pitchers in the 100+ IP club and the average IP at 110 amongst the ten - the median average for those over 100 IP from 2021 to 2024 was also 110 IP. I know that last season (2024) there was a philosophy and practice to allow starter’s to go further into games and eat up more innings. I think the data is inconclusive for the four seasons in the 2020’s to date - if I’m able I will revisit it after a few more years complete.

So long story short is the data reflects that the 1950’s and 1960’s were outliers and there’s been a general consistency of the annual quantity of pitchers in the 100+ IP club from 1970 to 2019 - it’s a 50 year run that represents a very long “this day and age” time frame 🤓. The median average amongst those in the 100+ club had been even more consistent at 141 from 1960 to 2009 then dropping to 128 during the 2010 to 2019 decade. My initial thoughts in this analysis is that the more things change the more they generally stay the same - at least regarding the numbers for the 100+ IP club - just sayin 🥸
