In exchange for LHP Erik Miller the Phillies acquired hard throwing reliever Yunior Marte from the San Francisco Giants today. Marte is 27 years old and has been added to the 40 man roster - he will be in major league spring training camp competing for an opening day roster spot with the big club.
From the Phillies press release - “Marte split last season between triple-A Sacramento and the Giants, which included his major league debut. He began the year with Sacramento, where he was 1-1 with a 3.16 ERA (9 ER, 25.2 IP), nine walks, 35 strikeouts and a 0.70 WHIP in 25 appearances. For the Giants, the Dominican Republic native worked in 39 games over six stints with the club and went 1-1 with a 5.44 ERA (29 ER, 48.0 IP), 22 walks and 44 strikeouts. To end the season, he posted a 1.93 ERA (2 ER, 9.1 IP) and a .152 opponents’ batting average (5-33) over his final eight games for San Francisco. According to Statcast data, among all major league pitchers, Marte finished in the 94th percentile in average fastball velocity (97.8 MPH) and his barrel percentage (3.5%) was in the 97th percentile.”
Here are my previous notes on Erik Miller - 24 years old - LHP - Birthdate : 2/13/98 - 2019 4th round draft selection - Stanford University - This Fan’s View - The development plan for Erik this past season was to acclimate a routine where he could focus on his power arsenal, work between appearances with side sessions and weight lifting training and build back repetitive strength in his shoulder which had been a lingering issue. He’s no longer hindered by the shoulder and is now considered a full time reliever going forward. A lefty with a power arsenal can be a valuable bullpen asset. The numbers at Reading are more in line with expectancies and capabilities ( 2.23 ERA in 36 IP ) than his late season stint with Lehigh Valley but that experience can prove to be valuable for next season. Erik needs to be much more consistent in both control and command ( 5.77 BB/9 is way to high ) - the stuff can certainly play at the highest level. He will come into 2023 spring camp with an opportunity to turn heads. The speed gun : fastball ( sits in a range of 92 to 96 mph - max 97 ), slider ( x to x mph ), change up ( 80 to 81 mph ) and curve ( 73 to 76 mph ).
One power arm for another - hopefully the deal works out for each young man and club.
Happy Day, Happy Baseball ⚾️
