Twenty seven year old free agent RHP Nicholas Padilla has signed a minor league contract with the Phillies. He was the 2015 13th round draft pick of the Tampa Rays from Grayson Junior College in Denison, Texas. In 2020 he was selected by the Chicago Cubs in the minor league portion of the Rule 5 draft. The Cubs designated him for assignment in September of 2022 and he was claimed by the White Sox.
He has pitched in four major league games with the Cubs (2021) and White Sox (2023). Last season Padilla pitched for AAA level Charlotte as a reliever in the White Sox system and posted a 3.23 ERA in 25 appearances (30.2 IP) with 37 K’s and 16 walks. Opponents hit just .194 against him.
Nicholas was born in the Bronx, New York. He pitched for Team Puerto Rico in the 2023 World Baseball Classic as well as in previous tournaments. He’s shown a fastball up to 95 mph but it generally sits in the 91-93 mph range as a sinker. He also throws a sweeper, a cutter which he uses as a change up and curve ball. He’s known for his ability to produce ground balls. Will likely get a look in 2025 big league spring camp.
From a Fan’s View welcome to the Phillies Nicholas!
Happy Day, Happy Baseball ⚾️
