11/15/24 : Winter League Notes

Premier 12 Tournament:


Team USA advanced to the Super Round in Tokyo with a 12-2 victory over Team Mexico on 11/14.  Phillies center fielder Justin Crawford went 3 for 4 (two singles and an opposite field HR) in the game with two runs scored and an RBI.  Justin hit .333 (6 for 18) in the five game opening round with two singles, three doubles and a home run.  He walked twice, stole a base and posted two runs scored and three RBIs.  His OBP was .400 and he had an OPS of 1.067 👀👏.


Team USA finished 3-2 in Group A Pool play and advances to the Championship round along with Team Venezuela (4-1).  They will be joined by the top two teams from Pool B (in process).


The Championship round will be played in Tokyo, Japan in the Tokyo Dome scheduled for 11/21 to 11/24.


The Arizona Fall League :


The Phillies group played for the Glendale Desert Dogs.


In their final regular season game Glendale lost to Scottsdale 7-6.  Griff McGarry started and pitched 3.1 innings - 2 R, 3 H, 2 BB, 4 K’s - 62 pitches - 32 strikes.  Tristan Garnett pitched an inning in relief - 1 R, 3 H, 1 BB, 1 K - 21 pitches - 10 strikes.  Gabriel Rincones Jr went 2 for 3 (singles) with a walk, two runs scored and an RBI.


The Glendale team finished the year with a 16-14 record - although Salt River and Scottsdale had identical records they owned the tie breakers therefore Glendale finishes fourth and is eliminated from playoff contention.


The Surprise Saguaros (18-10) are the regular season winners and earned an automatic placement into the championship game while Salt River and Scottsdale will play a one game playoff today to determine who also reaches the game.  The Surprise Saguaros have won the last two league titles, two years ago the Phillies were part of that group.  The championship game is scheduled for 11/16.


Australian Baseball League :


Adelaide lost their season opener 5-4 to Sydney.  Trent Farquhar played shortstop and went 1 for 4 with a run scored and an RBI in the game, Luis Caicuto caught and went 0 for 2 with a walk, Nikau Pouaka-Grego played third base and was 0 for 3 with an RBI.  Former Phillies minor leaguer Jordan McArdle was 2 for 3 and Nick Ward was 1 for 4.


Current Phillies minor leaguers LHP Matt Osterberg, RHP Mitch Nuenborn, RHP Estibenzon Jimenez, C Luis Caicuto, C Lou Albrecht, INF Trent Farquhar, INF Diego Gonzalez and INF Nikau Pouaka-Grego are on the Adelaide Giants roster.  Free agent LHP Lachlan Wells and former Phillies minor leaguers INF Nick Ward, INF Curtis Mead, RHP Todd Van Steensel, OF Jared Carr, OF Jordan McArdle and 1B Rixon Wingrove are also on the club.  Current Phillies minor league coach Chris (Tank) Adamson returns to manage the two time defending league champions as does Pitching Coach and former Phillies minor league hurler Josh Tols.


Former Phillies minor league catchers Chris Burke, Logan Moore and Mitchell Edwards are playing for the Melbourne Aces as is infielder Robbie Glendinning.   Outfielder Tim Kennelly will play for the Perth Heat.  RHP Kyle Glogoski  is pitching for the Sydney Blue Sox.


Dominican Winter League :


Former Phillies minor league infielder Jonathan Villar went 3 for 5 with two RBIs for Aguilas Cibaeñas in a 5-4 ten inning loss to Toros del Este on 11/14.


Puerto Rico Winter League :


RHP Carlos Francisco pitched a perfect inning (2 K’s) in relief for Indios De Mayagüez on 11/14 in a 3-2 win over Leones De Ponce.


Other News :


Former Phillies LHP Cole Irvin has signed a one year contract ($1 million) with the Doosan Bears to play in the Korean Baseball Organization (KBO).
