11/17/24 : Winter League Roundup

Notes on Phillies and former Phillies participating in winter leagues or off-season tournaments.


Australian Baseball League :


The Phillies contingent is playing for the Adelaide Giants (1-3).


In yesterday’s action Adelaide lost to Sydney 6-4.  Shortstop Trent Farquhar went 2 for 4 (singles) with a walk and RBI from the lead off spot in the order for Adelaide. Catcher Luis Caicuto was 1 for 4 with a single and walk.  Third baseman Nikau Pouaka-Grego was 0 for 1 (single) with two walks, a run scored and RBI.  Nikau had a strong opening week series (.500 OBP - 7 for 14) with four hits, three walks and four RBIs.  He also made multiple fine defensive plays at third base 👀.  LHP Matt Osterberg started and pitched two innings (1 R, 3 H, 0 BB, 0 K’s - 31 pitches - 21 strikes).  Round two of the regular season is 11/21 to 11/23 for Adelaide as they will host Canberra.


Dominican Winter League :


Center fielder Johan Rojas made his season debut for Gigantes del Cibao yesterday as he led off and walked once in four plate appearances, stole a base and scored a run in a 10-2 win against Toros del Este.  Johan’s only previous playing experience in the league was from 2022 when he appeared in five regular season and two playoff games for Tigres del Licey.


Puerto Rico Winter League :


Former Phillies outfielder Jan Hernandez went 2 for 4 with two walks, an RBI and run scored for Gigantes De Carolina in a 7-6 win against Cangrejeros De Santurce.


Mexican Winter League :


Former Phillies minor league infielder Esteban Quiroz went 2 for 5 (single & double) with two runs scored for Tomateros de Culiacán in a 6-4 win against Sultanes de Monterrey.


Venezuela Winter League :


Former Phillie RHP Bubby Rossman picked up a win for Navigators of Magellan with a scoreless inning of relief (1 H, 3 K’s) in a 5-3 victory over Bravos of Margarita last evening.  Former Phillies RHP Mauricio Llovera pitched two innings (1 R, 2 H, 0 BB, 2 K’s) for Cardenales de Lara in a 9-4 loss to Tiburones de La Guaira.


Premiere 12 Tournament :


Former Phillies minor league RHP Franklyn Kilome pitched five scoreless innings (1 H, 0 BB, 5 K’s - 57 pitches - 36 strikes) for Team Dominican Republic in a 9-6 loss to Team Korea on 11/16.


Other News :


Former Phillies RHP Drew Anderson has re-signed with SSG Landers in the Korean Baseball Organization (KBO) for a reported $1.2 million. He went 11-3 last season with a 3.89 ERA in 24 starts (115.2 IP) with 158 K’s.   Free agent catcher Aramis Garcia has signed a minor league contract with the Arizona Diamondbacks.
