2/13/25 : Spotlight - RHP Luke Gabrysh

Writer's picture: Steve PotterSteve Potter

Twenty one year old RHP Luke Gabrysh was selected by the Phillies in the 15th round of the 2024 draft from St. Joseph’s University. He’s from Wilmington, Delaware and graduated from Concord High School where he earned First Team All-State and All-Conference honors as a shortstop while garnering Second Team All-State and First Team All-Conference accolades on the mound. Luke also excelled in basketball earning All-Conference honors on the court.

He’s a lifelong Phillies fan who has attended many games at CBP with both family and friends. At St. Joseph’s University he appeared in 40 games (three starts) as a back end reliever accumulating 68.2 innings pitched with 55 strikeouts and 51 walks. He popped up even more on the scout’s radar though with his performance for the Trenton Thunder in the 2024 Draft League where in nine games he posted a 1.42 ERA in 12.2 IP with 23 K’s and 5 walks along with a stellar 0.868 WHIP.  Luke has five pitch mix with a high spin slider with big horizontal movement, his four seam fastball and sinker both sit consistently at 92-95 mph.

After signing with the Phillies he spent the balance of the 2024 season training at the complex and while he’s yet to appear in an official game Gabrysh did appear in two “Bridge League” contests (first game was vs the Pirates, second was against the Blue Jays) and threw two innings - he showed even bigger arm capabilities by touching 97 mph with his fastball.  Luke participated in both the Fall and Winter High Performance Camps and will also participate in upcoming minor league mini-camp - I got to see him throw in a live BP just last week in HP camp - has a very similar arm slot and release to Phillies big leaguer Aaron Nola.

I  recently had a chance to ask him a few questions - here’s our interaction.

What was your reaction when you found out the Phillies were interested in you and when you signed a contract with them?

“I was ecstatic when I heard and it felt like a dream. If I could have picked one team it would be the Phillies.”

How cool is it to now be training in the same facility in Clearwater that has housed Phillies legends in prior years?

“It’s been awesome training and seeing all of them just around the complex and fields. It’s definitely a weird feeling but such a cool one.”

Who would you like to meet on the current Phillies major league roster and chat baseball with?

“If I could meet with anyone it would have to be Aaron Nola or Zack Wheeler. I have gotten Nola comparisons about our pitching styles being similar and I think I could learn a lot from him since he has been dominant for years in the bigs.”

You just concluded participating in Winter High Performance Camp - how amped are you for the season to begin?

“I am very amped up for the season to come and start throwing in live games. Ready to get to work out there and show people who I am.”

What is your pitch arsenal and what goals have you set for this coming season?

“My pitch arsenal is a four seam, sinker, slider, cutter and change up. My goals for the season is just to attach hitters with all my pitches, limit walks and enjoy the journey. My favorite pitch to throw and one I feel most confident in is my sinker.”

I thank Luke for answering my inquiries. We wish him well this season and in years to come. It’s always great to see local fellas get to realize a dream of taking the field as a player in the organization they grew up cheering for. As he climbs the minor league ladder perhaps one day that dream comes even further to realization with a Phillies big league debut - those dreams can indeed come true.

Happy Day, Happy Baseball ⚾️
