So I had a dream that the Eagles won the Super Bowl, that there was a tremendous parade yesterday to celebrate it and that my writing and website were both acknowledged as a go to for Phillies Player Development news 😳. Well at least part of that was true when I woke up this morning 😂.
Minor leaguers are off till Monday when Mini-Camp commences.
Major league pitchers and catchers camp resumed today. The highlight of today’s activities were three live BP sessions on Roberts field. RH Nasbil Crismatt, RH Tyler Phillips and RH Alan Rangel each threw a session that approximated about ten minutes each. They faced members of the catching contingent.
Garrett Stubbs homered over the right field fence against Crismatt. Payton Henry hit the ball sharply a couple times for knocks.
Crismatt is sneaky fast, he’s a pitch-ability hurler who uses off speed deliveries as primaries and his low nineties fastball in pitcher’s counts. The key to his success is keeping hitters off-balance. The thirty year old has appeared on 114 major league games - he pitched last season in five games with the Dodgers.
Phillips was down in the zone today where he’s very effective. Tyler has a mid nineties fastball to couple with a good slider and curve. He’s been a workhorse by today’s standards the past couple of seasons in the minors with 240 total innings pitched and posted 36 frames in the show last season as well with the Phillies. The big fella is a testament to the rehab team as he progressed back from a year and half of inactivity recovering from TJ surgery in 2021 and 2022 - he was back on a familiar mound today. The young man has major league stuff and if he doesn’t make the Phillies club out of spring camp will very likely be in the show elsewhere in my humble opinion.
Rangel is a long arm delivery pitcher who’s akin to Crismatt in that he relies on savvy, deception and mix to record outs. He was added to the Phillies 40 man roster this off season and has a minor league option remaining.
Other Notes :
Autograph collectors come in all ages but most players are especially willing to interact with kids. I’ve noticed this week how Garrett Stubbs takes the time each day to sign for fans, youngsters in particular. Payton Henry today even engaged some young folks in a game of rock, paper and scissors. That’s good stuff 🤓.
Happy Day, Happy Baseball ⚾️
