2/25/25 : Today in Spring Training

Ninth day of minor league mini-camp. Third Grapefruit League game of the season.


Grapefruit League Game Three - Phillies 5 Rays 4 (Port Charlotte)


Summary :


Otto Kemp walked in the third inning, Johan Rojas was hit by a pitch. They both advanced on a ground out by Brandon Marsh.  Edmundo Sosa singled to score them.


A single, stolen base and two ground outs scored a run for Tampa in the bottom of the third.


Justin Crawford reached on a fielders choice ground out in the fourth inning and scored on a double by Otto Kemp.


A single, stolen base, double (former Phillies minor leaguer Curtis Mead) and single scored two runs for Tampa in the bottom of the fourth inning.


Paul McIntosh reached on an error to begin the seventh inning, Gabriel Rincones Jr walked. Carson Taylor singled to score McIntosh. Rafael Lantigua singled to score a run.


The Rays scored a run in the bottom of the seventh on two singles, a wild pitch and sacrifice fly.


At the Plate : 5 R, 7 H, 7 BB, 6 K’s


Carson Taylor was 2 for 2 with two singles and an RBI. Otto Kemp doubled, walked, scored a run and had an RBI in three plate appearances.  Edmundo Sosa was 1 for 3 with a single and two RBIs. Trent Farquhar doubled in his first ever Grapefruit League AB 👏. Gabriel Rincones Jr lined a hard hit drive to right center in the 8th inning that the Rays outfielder ran down.

LH Christopher Sanchez - 2 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 0 BB, 3 K’s - touched 98 mph with fastball.

RH Joel Kuhnel - 1 IP, 1 R, 1 H, 0 BB, 0 K’s

RH Michael Mercado - 1 IP, 2 R - 1 earned, 3 H, 0 BB, 0 K’s

RH Devin Sweet - 2/3 IP - retired both batters faced - left game after being hit by a line drive off his tricep.

RH Andrew Bechtold - 1/3 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 1 BB, 1 K

RH Nicholas Padilla - 1 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 0 BB, 0 K’s

RH Griff McGarry - 1 IP, 1 R, 2 H, 0 BB, 2 K’s - he threw well, one of the hits was a pop fly that fell in shallow right field.

RH Austin Schulfer - 1 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 0 BB, 1 K

RH Jose Cuas - 1 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 1 BB, 0 K’s


Defensive Gem :


A strike em out throw em out double play ended the bottom of the 8th with Austin Schulfer striking out the batter, catcher Caleb Ricketts throwing a one hopper to second base and second baseman Trent Farquhar making a neat snag of the throw and quick tag on the baserunner attempting to steal second base.

Nelson Alvarez, Noah Skirrow, Casey Steward, Jack Dallas, Daniel Harper, Jake Eddington, Alex McFarlane, Gabe Mosser, Mavis Graves, Chuckie King, Ethan Chenault, Micah Ottenbreit, Andrew Baker, Josbel Garcia, Tommy McCollum, Braeden Fausnaught, Brandon Beckel, Adilson Peralta, Maxwell Hernandez, Konnor Ash and Juan Amarante.


Daniel Harper had another strong outing - good pop on the heater along with a swing and miss slider. Gabe Mosser impressed with command and a hard slider. Braeden Fausnaught commanded the zone - good mix, won’t beat himself. Erick Brito swung the bat well, saw a couple hard hit liners off his bat. Carson DeMartini hit the baseball solid all day (both in BP & live BP). Dante Nori showed pop in his BP, at least four drives over the right field fence, Eduardo Tait hit a couple moonshots that reached the trees beyond the Roberts right field fence. He had a hard double down the right field line in live BP.  Alirio Ferrebus really impressed with his BP session - consistently squared it up and drove the baseball.  Kelly Dugan lined a hard single in live BP against Gabe Mosser.  Griffin Burkholder continues to impress with approach and skillset - hits everything hard in BP.
