2/7/24 : Phillies claim RHP Max Castillo from Red Sox

The Phillies have claimed RHP Max Castillo off waivers from Boston. He features a four seam fastball (93 to 94 mph), slider and change-up. He’s a strike thrower whose best pitch is his slider.  Castillo is 24 years old and has a career 4.04 ERA in 136 minor league games (124 starts) accumulating 654.2 IP and a WHIP of 1.27.  He was originally signed by the Toronto Blue Jays in 2015 as an international free agent.  On 8/2/22 he was traded to the Kansas City Royals as part of the Whit Merrifield deal.  He was designated for assignment by the Royals on 12/19/23 and claimed by the Red Sox who designated him on 2/2/24 - claimed by the Phillies today.

Castillo has 21 games (six starts) of major league experience with the Blue Jays (2022) and Royals (2022-23) with a career 5.43 ERA while striking out 47 batters in 59 ⅔ innings. He spent most of last season at Triple-A Omaha, going 6-7 with a 4.58 ERA and 94 strikeouts in 116 innings over 22 appearances (21 starts).  Castillo pitched this winter in the Venezuelan Winter League and posted a 2.72 ERA in 11 appearances (9 starts) over 49.2 innings of work. He has minor league options left.

To make room on the 40 man roster outfielder Simon Muzziotti was designated for assignment.
