3/14/25 : Today in Spring Training - Busy Day at Complex/Stadium

Writer: Steve PotterSteve Potter

Spring breakout game - Phillies 5 Pirates 3 (Clearwater - BayCare BallPark)

Scoring Summary :

Carson DeMartini was hit by a pitch in the third inning and scored on a double by Devin Saltiban.  Aroon Escobar laced a double down the left field line to score Saltiban.

The Pirates scored a run in the top of the fifth on a walk, hit batter and single.

Justin Crawford tripled in the fifth inning and scored on a wild pitch.

Pittsburgh added two runs in the sixth inning on a double, two walks, hit batter and passed ball.  It could have been worse but Micah Ottenbreit did a great job coming in with the bases loaded and retiring all three batters he faced - two by strikeout!

Carson DeMartini hit a home run in the seventh inning.

Gabriel Rincones Jr doubled in the eighth inning and scored on a single by Alirio Ferrebus.

At the Plate : 5 R, 7 H, 2 BB, 9 K’s

Justin Crawford was 2 for 4 (single & triple) with a stolen base and run scored.  Devin Saltiban, Aroon Escobar and Gabriel Rincones Jr each doubled.  Carson DeMartini hit a home run.

Fielding Notes :

Aroon Escobar played well at third base, threw a runner out at home, handled all his chances and attacked ground balls exactly as he was taught to. Aidan Miller was excellent at shortstop, made a slick run and throw play for an out at first on a grounder in the hole, he then switched to third base (first time this year) for the later half of the game. Eduardo Tait showed off his arm strength as a catcher throwing out a runner at second.  Devin Saltiban made a nifty snag at second base on a hard hit grounder while playing in an infield up situation with runners on second and third, he held the runners and recorded the out at first base.

I watched a few innings of the scrimmage - LH Braeden Fausnaught was outstanding - he finished his two innings with such few pitches that he had to throw on the side mounds to complete his pitch count!  Zack Tukis threw well also, big arm but also shows a nasty off speed that had hitters off balance.

Note :

Minor leaguers have a day off tomorrow - no practices scheduled.

Major League Camp Live BP :

Andrew Painter threw a one inning live BP session facing Phillies major leaguers - Rafael Marchan caught him.  Word is he was dominant both with fastball velocity and a strong slider used as a put away pitch.  Kid is special.
