3/26/22 : Spring Training Today

Ten O’Clock starts this morning for minor league games - two games at Carpenter Complex against the Jays and two in Dunedin at the Toronto complex. We saw some exciting young hurlers in action today on Roberts and Ashburn Fields.

Roberts Field :

Twenty year old RH Jean Cabrera started and put the Jays down in order in his scheduled one inning of work. Very good movement on his pitches, excellent mechanics ( compact and easy ) and put away secondaries were the highlights of his outing. RH Oswald Medina followed with two innings, another twenty year old. He also has excellent mechanics and showed a sharp breaking slider today that had batters swinging over the top of it. Lefty JP Woodward tossed a scoreless frame, he’s a strike thrower who gets after it. RH Jose Pena Jr ( 18 yrs old ) continued to impress with his inning today, very good pop on the heater and showed us a splitter today along with a hard slider - really strong skills. LH Tristan Garnett had a good outing as did RH Konnor Ash who struck out the side with fade away change ups and sliders.

Not a lot of offense in the contest for the Phillies as they were shut out. Edgar Made had a sharp single and Oscar Gonzalez squared up a long drive to the warning track in center field that was run down by the Jays defender. Defensively Gavin Tonkel made a nice over the shoulder catch in center field, tracked a hard hit ball really well and hauling it in easily.

Ashburn Field :

Chris Burke doubled and Freylin Minyety homered to lead the offense to victory. The 22 year old Minyety seemingly always makes hard contact, the young man can swing the bat.

Tyler McKay, Rodolfo Sanchez, Jonathan Hughes, Carlo Reyes, Jared Wetherbee, Carlos Francisco and Matt Osterberg each pitched in the game for the Phillies. Dasan Brown clubbed two home runs for the Blue Jays - he’s got 80 grade speed - it’s a rarity to be graded that highly in any of the skills but he can fly - today he just needed to trot around the base paths a couple of times.

Other Notes :

Scott Kingery took grounders on Roberts Field this morning at second base inclusive of making throws to first base.

Word is that RH Andrew Painter flat out dominated in his two innings of work yesterday against the Tigers - apparently it was six up, six down in a very rapid and dominant manner 💪👏. Hurlers James Marvel, Ben Brown, Christian McGowan, Jonathan Hennigan, Noah Skirrow and Ethan Lindow each reportedly had strong showings yesterday as well against the Tigers.

We had the good fortune of meeting Jonathan Hughes parents and his fiancé Hannah today as well as Noah Skirrow’s dad. Always enjoy meeting the families.

Tigers 14 Phillies 8

Offense :

Matt Vierling laced a triple to score Johan Camargo ( reached on an error ) in the second inning. Mickey Moniak then clubbed a home run over the center field fence ( it hit the batter’s eye ) to score Vierling. That was Mickey’s second tater this spring.

Rhys Hoskins clubbed a solo home run over the center field fence in the third inning.

Didi Gregorius crushed a long fly HR on a hanging curve ball way over the right field fence to score Jean Segura ( reached on an error) in front of him in the 5th inning.

Nick Maton hit a high fly off the right field wall in the 8th inning but base runner John Andreoli ( singled ) got a poor read on it at first base and it went for a single. Darick Hall continues to rake with a double against a big league lefty ( Andrew Chafin ) in the bottom of the 8th to score Andreoli. Edgar Cabral singled to score Maton.

Pitching :

Zach Eflin pitched very well - two perfect frames - the fellas thereafter pretty much struggled finding the strike zone. Nick Duron impressed with a solid perfect 8th inning with two strikeouts popping 98 mph on the radar - a name to remember.
