Defensive Gem :

Center fielder Matt Kroon made a long running catch on a slicing ball to left center and ultimately slammed into the outfield wall to end the seventh inning. For those of us who’ve watched Matty play over the years it is no surprise that he he went all out with no fear of the wall in a 15-4 lopsided ST game - that’s the way he always plays and it’s cost him some injuries during his career.  The kid has a lot of Aaron Rowand in him. Good stuff.

Minor League Camp Call-Ups for the game :

Pitchers : Andrew Bechtold, Brendan Beckel, Josh Hejka, Emmanuel Mejia, Mitch Neunborn

Catchers : Kody Shojinaga

Infielders : Keaton Anthony, Robert Moore, Carson DeMartini, Luis Verdugo

Outfielders : Ethan Wilson

Grapefruit League record is now 4-6-1

Minor League Spring Trainjng Camp at Carpenter Complex :

A bit of rain in the area today. Hitting was indoors in cages, only fielding practice and side bullpens outdoors in the AM, no live BP’s or scrimmage scheduled.

Side Bullpens : 15 pitchers

Braeden Fausnaught, Kyler Carmack, Konnor Ash, Noah Skirrow, Mavis Graves, Gabe Mosser, Trey Dillard, Jack Dallas, Paxton Thompson, Ryan Degges, Jake Eddington, Gunner Mayer, Marcus Morgan, Sam Highfill and Micah Ottenbreit

Coaching Addition :

Former Phillies minor league catcher Herbert Iser has been added to the player development coaching staff as a position coach. He has been assigned to the Jersey Shore BlueClaws staff. Herbert was the Phillies 23rd round draft selection in the 2019 draft from Dallas Baptist University. He played five seasons in the organization before being released on 3/26/24. Last season Iser played for the Kansas City Monarchs in the American Association. As a player he was always noted for his defensive acumen and abilities, now he embarks on a new phase of his baseball career teaching those skills to others. From a Fan’s View welcome back to the organization Herbert!

Other Notes :

Each year there are “big arm” pitchers who are added to the mix in the organization, minor league off-season transactions often go under the radar in that regard. But then we get to see these fellas take the mounds in spring camp and “wow” us with their ability to throw the baseball with high velocity. I’ve already written about Andrew Bechtold, Emmanuel Mejia and Augusto Calderon who are each upper nineties/triple digits capable fast ball hurlers but there’s one more that made his first backfield appearance of note yesterday.

Right hander Guillo Zuniga is a 26 year old that was signed on 12/13/24 as a free agent to a minor league contract. Zuniga appeared in 15 major league games with the Angels in 2024. He was originally signed by the Atlanta Braves on 7/2/16 from Cartagena, Colombia, then signed as a free agent by the Los Angeles Dodgers on 12/6/17, by the St Louis Cardinals on 12/6/22 and was subsequently traded by the Cardinals to the Angels for cash considerations on 2/7/24. The 6’5” hurler features a sinker and four seamer (96-99 mph), slider and changeup. He’s pitched for Team Colombia in the World Baseball Classic and is noted for having a high velocity fastball (has been in triple digits) and heavy sinker along with a power slider that can be a plus offering  - he has struggled with command/control in his career - when he can harness that he’s been dominant - just inconsistent in doing so. In yesterday’s minor league intra-squad scrimmage Zuniga retired all four batters he faced, he’s a non-roster invitee to big league camp but was delayed in arriving due to work visa issues. Add his name to the new “big arms” in the organization that might just have equally big impacts this season.

Former Phillies Signings :

Right hand pitchers Alex Garbrick and Jonh Henriquez have signed on to play in the independent Atlantic League. The two former Phillies minor leaguers were released by the club in February. Garbrick will be pitching for the Lancaster franchise where he will join former Phillies minor league infielder Nick Ward on the roster while Henriquez will play for Charleston.

Happy Day, Happy Baseball ⚾️
