During the MLB off-seasons of 2021 and 2022 there was a buzz about the free agent shortstop classes. In the 2021 off season Corey Seager, Carlos Correa, Javier Baez and Trevor Story were on the market. All signed extended year contracts however Correa had a one year opt-out in his deal with the Twins which he took the following year albeit he eventually re-signed with Minnesota. In the 2022 off-season Correa re-entered the market joining Trea Turner, Dansby Swanson and Xander Boegarts as the marquee names. Following are some statistics on how each has performed to date.
Trea Turner - PHL - 2 completed years plus this season to date - 300 games - 1,336 PA’s - .276/.329/.453 - .781 with 64 doubles, 48 HR’s and 145 RBIs, 55 SB and 203 runs scored - now 31 years old - has played in 294 games at SS for the Phillies - signed 11 year contract on 12/8/22
Xander Boegarts - SD - 2 completed years plus this season to date - 292 games - 1,230 PA’s - .274/.333/.409 - .743 with 54 doubles, 30 HR’s and 107 RBIs, 36 SB and 143 runs scored - now 32 years old - has played in 191 games at SS, 85 at 2B for the Padres - signed 11 year contract on 12/9/22
Dansby Swanson - CHC - 2 completed years plus this season to date - 323 games - 1,348 PA’s - .239/.314/.400 - .715 with 57 doubles, 42 HR’s and 161 RBIs, 32 SB and 180 runs scored - now 31 years old - has played in 322 games at SS for the Cubs - signed 7 year contract on 12/21/22
Carlos Correa - MIN - 3 completed years plus this season to date - 382 games - 1,631 PA’s - .266/.344/.443 - .787 with 79 doubles, 55 HR’s and 189 RBIs, 0 SB and 192 runs scored - now 30 years old - has played in 376 games at SS for the Twins - signed 6 year contract on 1/11/23
Trevor Story - BOS - 3 completed years plus this season to date - 189 games - 776 PA’s - .242/.300/.407 - .707 with 40 doubles, 26 HR’s and 105 RBIs, 35 SB and 85 runs scored - now 32 years old - has played in 87 games at SS, 95 at 2B for the Red Sox - signed 6 year contract on 3/23/22
Corey Seager - TEX - 3 completed years plus this season to date - 414 games - 1,816 PA’s - .281/.350/.522 - .872 with 89 doubles, 100 HR’s and 259 RBIs, 6 SB and 255 runs scored - now 30 years old - has played in 389 games at SS for the Rangers - signed 10 year contract on 12/1/21
Javier Baez - DET - 3 completed years plus this season to date - 380 games - 1,496 PA’s - .222/.264/.345 - .609 with 60 doubles, 32 HR’s and 167 RBIs, 29 SB and 152 runs scored - now 32 years old - has played in 349 games at SS, 12 at 3B and 6 in CF for the Tigers - signed 6 year contract on 12/1/2
