The Phillies have promoted right-handed pitchers Enrique Segura and Luis Avila from the FCL roster to the Clearwater Threshers. Here’s some notes on each.
RHP Enrique Segura - 19 years old - signed as an international free agent 1/15/22 from San Pedro de Macoris, DR
2023 Stats : appeared in 11 FCL games (10 starts) amassing 36.2 IP with 33 strikeouts and 29 walks. Recorded a 1.66 WHIP and averaged 9.19 pitches per inning pitched with a strike ratio of 60 %. Best outing was on 7/21/23 in Dunedin vs Blue Jays - 5 innings, no runs, two hits, five strikeouts and two walks.
Pitching Coordinator Travis Hergert : “Low to mid 90’s fastball. Very long loose delivery, with some delivery comparison to Nola.”
2024 : while velocity is down a bit his control and command are much better. In six starts he’s posted a 3.90 ERA in 32.1 IP with 31 K’s and 12 walks. On May 11th pitched five innings as part of a three pitcher no hitter against the FCL Tigers, we were on hand to watch that one!
RHP Luis Avila - 21 years old - signed 2/23/23 as an international free agent from Turmero, Venezuela
2023 Stats : appeared in 14 games (all in relief) for DSL Phillies White posting a 2.35 ERA in 23 IP with 23 K’s and 8 walks.
Pitching Coordinator Travis Hergert : “Avila is a power arm that throws from a high slot. He also throws a hard cutter around 87-88 mph and a low 80’s slider. Fastball range is 95-97 mph”
Enrique Segura leads the FCL in K’s (31) and IP (32.1) and is 8th in WHIP (1.30). Luis Avila leads the league in saves (4).
