Notes :
The Durham broadcaster made a very practical and prudent statement about highly touted RHP Shane Baz who started the game for the Bulls. He said that returning from TJ surgery (Baz had his surgery in September of 2022 and returned to game action with Durham on 5/4/24) is very rarely a straight line back but rather more of a zig-zag of ups and downs as the pitcher both learns how to pitch again and his body reacts to doing so. We should keep that in mind with expectations for our hurlers who will be making similar returns next season (aka Andrew Painter) - it’s not going to be a back on the hill and the magic quickly returns - in fact in the ten years I’ve been writing about baseball I can’t recall anyone who’s ever done that with many having secondary setbacks and return stints on the IL while attempting to come back. It indeed takes time and is a zig-zag recovery process for everyone.
The IronPigs liner tonight included three former Rays and Durham Bulls players (Jim Haley, Ruben Cardenas and Cal Stevenson). The starting nine tonight for LHV had seven players who have spent prior time in the big leagues.
Did Ya Know 🧐 :
Tyler Gilbert recorded his first save of the year on June 19. It was his first save since 2019, when he had two during his first stint as an IronPig. In the intervening years, Gilbert managed to get traded twice, MiLB rule 5'd, signed a MiLB FA, and throw a no-hitter for the Diamondbacks in his first career start. Just four days later, Gilbert notched his second save of the season on Sunday, his first season with multiple saves since 2019. - Media Notes
