In addition to the previously announced promotions of four players (Jordan Viars, Luke Russo, Braydon Tucker, Pierce Bennett) from Clearwater earlier this week the Jersey Shore BlueClaws have also added infielder Trent Farquhar and RHP Wen-Hui Pan to the roster. They both made their Jersey Shore season debuts last night.
INF - Trent Farquhar - 23 years old - signed as an un-drafted free agent 7/19/23 - Michigan State
Had a very strong showing earlier this year with the Clearwater Threshers playing in 32 games (144 plate appearances) posting a .314/.493/.429 slash line with a .922 OPS. Trent hit seven doubles, one triple, a home run and had twelve RBIs - he walked 35 times which at the time of his 5/29/24 injury (hammate) was leading the Florida State League.
Trent is a heady player who is well schooled in baseball acumen and fundamentally sound. He has played second, short and third and will continue that path of versatility. Has on-field leadership qualities, plays hard and will do the little things to win games. He reminds me of Mickey Morandini in his approach and desire to succeed.
A tidbit from Greg Giombarrese in today’s BlueClaws media notes - Trent was hit by three pitches in his BlueClaws debut matching a team record set by Nick Ward on 6/6/23 against Hudson Valley at ShoreTown Ballpark.
RHP Wen Hui Pan - 21 years old - signed as an international free agent 1/15/23 - Hualien, Taiwan
In his first pro season last year Pan put up good numbers between Clearwater and Jersey Shore - 3.96 ERA in 33 appearances - 63.2 IP with 88 strikeouts and 24 walks, a 1.07 WHIP and a .190 batting average against. At Clearwater he was especially strong - 2.81 ERA in 57.2 IP, a 0.87 WHIP with 81 K’s and 19 walks, opponents hit just .154 against him. Was promoted to Jersey Shore on 8/21/23.
This spring he suffered an off-field injury (broken pinkie and hand bone) that placed him on the 60 day IL on 3/20/24, recently made four rehab appearances (one FCL, three with the Threshers) totaling 8.1 innings. The plan going into the season was to place him in the starting rotation at Jersey Shore and see how that developed. He’s not stretched out at this point to provide starters innings and will likely continue in a bulk reliever role now that he’s activated, might be a AFL roster occupant this fall. Last night he pitched two scoreless innings. Pan has spent a great amount of time on physical and strength development while working with the rehab team. Has a hard, riding fastball that can reach triple digits and a splitter as main secondary - is incorporating a slider as third pitch. Should be fun to watch.
Happy Day, Happy Baseball ⚾️
