He joined the team on June 22nd and has posted a .297 batting average ( 28 for 94 ) since arriving.

Strong Pitching :

RH Victor Vargas ( 20 years old ) - was called upon to make a spot start at the AAA level on 7/25 coming up from Low A Clearwater and he excelled ! - 5 shutout innings - 2 H, 2 BB, 5 K’s - Victor won the system pitcher of the month in June … he’s now 5-1 in 14 games this season with a 3.12 ERA in 54 2/3 IP. Great job by the young man on Sunday.

RH Mike Adams ( 26 yrs old ) - continued to shine with 2 appearances of 2 scoreless innings of relief on 7/20 and on 7/24. During the month of July in 6 appearances ( 10 IP ) he’s yet to given up a run and has a WHIP of 1.00. Since being promoted to LHV from Jersey Shore on 6/25 he’s posted a 0.77 ERA in 11 2/3 IP ( 8 games ) … in 17 of his 22 overall appearances this season he has held the opposition scoreless.

LH Tyler Alexander ( 29 yrs old ) - went 5 2/3 innings on 7/23 ( 1 R, 6 H, 1 BB, 6 K’s ) … Tyler used a mix of pitches, change of speed and excellent location to keep the WooSox off balance. Not a hard tosser by any stretch but was dealing on Friday night.

Reading ( Overall Record 29-43, 3-3 during the past week ) - next series @ home vs Somerset ( Yankees Affiliate )

UTL Grenny Cumana ( 25 yrs old ) - went 9 for 23 ( .391 ) for the week … since joining the Reading roster on 7/13 he’s 12 for 34 ( .353 ) with 2 doubles, a home run and 8 RBIs. Grenny has stepped into the veteran presence role voided when Jorge Bonifacio was promoted to LHV. He hit .301 in 186 AB’s ( Reading & LHV ) in 2019.

SS Bryson Stott ( 23 yrs old ) - went 7 for 23 ( .304 ) during the week with 4 doubles, a home run and 3 RBIs … he’s gone 16 for 52 ( .308 ) since July 7th after ending a 1 for 24 struggle his 6 games before that … it’s all about keeping the head up, making adjustments and moving forward.

Arquimedes Gamboa ( 23 yrs old ) - went 7 for 22 (.318 ) for the week … he had an 8 game hitting streak ( 13 for 31 ) going that ended on 7/24. For the month of July Arquimedes is hitting .338 ( 24 for 71 ) with 5 doubles, 3 home runs and 10 RBIs.

Skirrow and Reyes were promoted to Reading during the week from Jersey Shore. Both Lackney ( 1.24 ERA in 21 gms -36 IP ) and Marconi ( 1.93 ERA in 22 gms - 32 2/3 IP ) have had outstanding seasons to date as often used relievers.

RH Jack Perkins ( 23 yrs old ) - made another solid start on 7/22 - 6 IP, 2 R - 1 earned, 5 H, 2 BB, 5 K’s. Since being promoted to Reading from Jersey Shore on 6/12 he’s been rock solid for the R-Phils in 8 starts posting a 3.56 ERA in 43 IP, he’s pitched six innings in five of those appearances.

Jersey Shore ( Overall Record 32-40, 3-3 during the past week ) - next series @ home vs Brooklyn ( Mets Affiliate )

The system player of the week has to be OF Jhailyn Ortiz ( 22 yrs old ) - went 11 for 27 ( .407 ) during the week with 2 doubles, 6 home runs and 12 RBIs. In the month of July Jhailyn has hit 12 home runs and driven in 24 runs giving him 18 taters for the season, 49 RBIs and a very respectable .260 batting average in 250 AB’s.

INF Nate Fassnacht ( 23 yrs old ) - 5 for 17 ( .294 ) and 2B/SS Casey Martin ( 22 yrs old ) -5 for 18 (.278 ) both had solid weeks. Martin has struggled since joining Jersey Shore on 6/22 from Clearwater and hopefully this week kickstarts ongoing success for the balance of the season. Fassnacht also drew 5 walks during the week and scored seven runs primarily batting out of the leadoff spot in the order. He was activated from the IL on 7/16.

Strong Pitching :

RH Dominic Pipkin ( 21 yrs old ) - had a solid outing on 7/22 - 5 2/3 IP, 2 R, 7 H, 1 BB, 4 K’s. The power arm hurler ( mid to upper nineties heat ) has posted a 4-1 record with a 4.38 ERA in 14 games ( 51 1/3 IP ) with 57 K’s.

LH Ethan Lindow ( 22 yrs old ) - retuned to form on 7/23 - 6 IP, 0 R, 4 H, 1 BB, 5 K’s. He threw quality strikes and used his pitch arsenal to keep the Winston Salem hitters off balance and confused. He’s had a very good month of July posting a 2.05 ERA in 4 games ( 22 IP ) with 17 K’s and 5 walks … a WHIP of 1.00.

RH Tom Sutera ( 24 yrs old ) - had two solid outings during the week - on 7/22 - 2 1/3 IP, 1 R, 3 H, 0 BB, 2 K’s and on 7/25 - 3 IP, 0 R, 2 H, 1 BB, 3 K’s. He picked up his first win of the season with his relief effort on 7/25.

RH Aidan Anderson ( 24 yrs old ) - continues to impress with two scoreless appearances this week ( 7/21 & 7/24 ). He recorded the last out of the game on Saturday after coming into a bases loaded jam with the game winning run on second base. On 7/21 he tossed 2 innings. In six July appearances ( 10 2/3 IP ) he’s pitched shutout relief and has posted 10 K’s with no walks. On the season between Clearwater and Reading he’s got a 2.30 ERA in 17 games ( 27 1/3 IP ) with a WHIP of 0.84.

Clearwater ( Overall Record 35-36 , 3-3 during the past week ) - next series @ home vs Fort Myers ( Twins Affiliate )

A second half adjustment this week in the ABS pitch calling system perhaps resulted in 36 walks by Threshers hitters in the first three games of the series … our guys walked 24 batters in those games. Things settled down in the last three games of the series, keep in mind that in each series two of the six games are called by the umpire rather than the ABS tool.

Nicolas Torres ( 21 yrs old ) - went 6 for 20 (.300 ) for the week and is 12 for his last 35 ( .342 ). He’s had a solid month of July with 2 doubles, a triple and 2 home runs and has hit .273 for the month ( 21 for 77 )

Jadiel Sanchez ( 20 yrs old ) - went 6 or 21 ( .286 ) for the week with 2 home runs and 6 RBIs. He had a 10 game hitting streak ( 13 for 39 ) that ended on 7/24 … for the month of July including three games in the FCL he is hitting .302 ( 19 for 63 ) and has a hit in 15 of the 18 games he’s played in during the month.

Abrahan Gutierrez ( 21 yrs old ) - went 5 for 13 ( .385 ) in four games during the week with four walks, 2 doubles and a home run. Abrahan is hitting .285 ( 49 for 172 ) for the season with 9 doubles, 5 home runs and 29 RBIs.

Micah Yonamine ( 20 yrs old ) - went 4 for 10 ( .400 ) with 6 walks in five games with 4 RBIs. Micah is 7 for his last 18 AB’s ( .389 ).

Strong Pitching :

LH Samuel Aldegheri ( 19 yrs old ) - 7/21 - 3 IP, 0 R, 2 H, 2 BB, 6 K’s - the Italian born hurler was promoted from the FCL Phillies on 7/17. We’ve seen him on the backfields, knows how to pitch.

LH Rafael Marconi ( 21 yrs old ) - 7/22 - 4 IP, 0 R, 2 H, 4 BB, 5 K’s - continues to impress - 2.38 ERA in 13 games ( 45 1/3 IP ) with 58 K’s and 20 walks

RH Gunner Mayer ( 20 yrs old ) - 7/24 - 3 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 1 BB, 5 K’s - his best outing since 7/10/19 in the GCL when he posted similar numbers. It’s just a matter of finding consistency … that comes from experience, talent is evident.

RH Carlos Francisco ( 22 yrs old ) - 2 scoreless relief appearances ( 7/20 & 7/22 ) - he’s been very good as a Thresher - 2.92 ERA in 13 games even after yielding 2 runs in his third appearance of the week on 7/25, Carlos briefly appeared with Jersey Shore where one bad outing in five appearances skewed his numbers there.

RH Fernando Lozano ( 21 yrs old ) - 7/20 - 3 IP, 1 R, 4 H, 1 BB, 1 K - another solid outing for Fernando in what’s been a very consistent and good season - 2.08 ERA in 15 games ( 43 1/3 IP) with 45 K’s - a 0.97 WHIP … he generally doesn’t beat himself - reminds me of the Cubs Kyle Hendricks - very similar build and pitching style.

Florida Complex League - Phillies ( 9-6 ) - 1-0 during the past week

Only one game completed during the week … Monday’s double header against Tigers East was suspended in the bottom of the third inning with the Phillies up 12-0. It was to be completed on 7/24 but games scheduled from the 22nd thru 24th were cancelled.

The only game completed this week was a 7-3 victory over the Jays at Dunedin on 7/21.

Jamari Baylor continued to wield a hot bat in that one with three hits including a triple. He’s hitting .313 thus far with a .950 OPS in 48 AB’s with 4 doubles, a triple, home run and 10 RBIs. The twenty year old 2019 3rd round draft selection from Richmond, VA has a powerful swing with big time velocity. Sam Jacobsak pitched well in the game, the 23 year old right hander seems destined to move up to full season play in relatively short order.

Outfielders Hunter Markwardt & Adam Haseley also seem ready to return to full season play once given the clearance to leave Clearwater.

Happy Day, Happy Baseball ⚾️
