Arrived early at Carpenter Complex this morning to say hello to LHP Tristan Garnett who’s here working with the rehab team. Tristan and Andrew Painter were part of the early morning workout crew (9 AM) getting their cardio and flat ground throwing efforts in. The guys run football routes and toss the pigskin around as part of the routine - they even have celebratory dances when they make a play 🤓. Gotta bust up the daily grind, all in good fun as the work gets done. Tristan is a bright light to talk with, has a great perspective on baseball and life, always enjoy chatting with him. Hopefully he’s back in action soon.
The new draftees and un-drafted free agent signings took the field in groups today, we even saw some BP action! Pitchers participated in a version of PFP’s on Carlton field, they took grounders at second base and shortstop to get acclimated. It’s a good collection of hurlers (14 worked out today with a 15th on hand waiting for physical results to come back - https://www.philliesbaseballfan.com/post/7-27-24-phillies-to-sign-rhp-ryan-dromboski.
The ten position players had group infield/outfield and catching practice. Minor league outfield coordinator Andy Abad had Dante Nori, Griffin Burkholder, John Spikerman, Carter Mathison and Joel Dragoo running thru drills in left field on Roberts. Afterwards infielders Carson DeMartini, Brady Day and Raider Tello took ground balls from minor league infield coordinator Adam Everett and legendary coach Roly de Armas on Roberts. Catchers Kodey Shojinago and Luke Davis worked with minor league catching coordinator Joe Mangiameli. All of the position players were coached on base running by minor league base-running coordinator Gary Cathcart on Carlton Field.
There’s a new addition to the minor league coaching staff - former Phillie Darnell Sweeney has joined the crew. He threw the first round of BP today. We were able to introduce ourselves not only to Darnell but also his parents who were also on hand.
While BP isn’t a tell all - it does give an indication on what potential the players have - both minor league hitting director Luke Murton and assistant director Edwar Gonzalez were on hand to observe. From my vantage point the raw power of Carson DeMartini stood out in the first group of hitters, he’s a well put together young man and has a whip like stroke from the left side that generates a long ball hitter’s bat speed. In the second group I was very impressed by the stillness of the hands and easy swing path generated by Dante Nori. My initial impression is that he is well schooled and has a professional hitters approach, there’s no wasted motion - from load to driving the barrel thru the ball it was quick and direct - no interruptions in his swing. Good stuff!
I got to chat with a few of the players after practice today, always try to introduce myself early on in order to establish a connection as we follow and write about them during their minor league tenure in the organization. It’s what we do - it takes a village of support - just my little part is all 😎.
Happy Day, Happy Baseball ⚾️
