7/7/24 : Minor League Week in Review - 7/1 to 7/6

A summary of results and standouts from the past week in the Phillies minor league system.

 Lehigh Valley :

The IronPigs went 4-2 against Scranton Wilkes Barre, they are 42-43 overall and 8-4 in the second half.  Infielder Buddy Kennedy was 7 for 24 with three doubles, a home run and seven walks (.469 OBP). Outfielder Cal Stevenson was 8 for 26 (.308) for the week and stole five bases in Monday’s game.  Infielder Jim Haley went 8 for 21 (.381).  First Baseman Darick Hall hit two home runs and tied Andy Tracy for the LHV franchise record for career home runs (69). By my unofficial count and research his 153 career minor league home runs ranks second behind only Joe Lis (164) as a Phillies minor leaguer.

RHP Jean Cabrera threw six no hit, no run innings on Thursday and struck out ten batters.  RHP Casey Steward went five innings in his start on Wednesday allowing one earned run.  LHP Andrew Walling made three appearance (3 IP) yielding no earned runs - he had a clutch save on Wednesday coming into a one out bases loaded situation in the ninth inning and retiring the only two batters he faced to preserve the win!

Clearwater :

The Threshers went 1-5 against Dunedin, they are 48-33 overall and 5-10 in the second half.  Catcher Jared Thomas was 4 for 13 (.308) with a double and home run.  Outfielder Yemal Flores made his Threshers debut going 3 for 8 (.375) with a home run.  Second baseman Devin Saltiban was 5 for 17 with a double and home run, he also walked eight times (.520 OBP).  Infielder  Bryson Ware drove in ten runs including five in one game, he hit three home runs during the week, was on base 10 times in 25 plate appearances (.400).  Infielder Nikau Pouaka-Grego was on base 8 times in 16 plate appearances (.500 OBP).  RHP Enrique Segura pitched six innings in his start on Wednesday allowing three runs, his first five innings were scoreless.  RHP Wen Hui Pan struck out five batters in three scoreless innings of work allowing just one hit.  RHP Jake Eddington returned to the Threshers from the IL and pitched two scoreless frames striking out four batters.  LHP Jordan Fowler began a rehab assignment on Saturday pitching two perfect innings striking out three batters.

FCL Phillies :

The FCL Phillies went 3-3 during the week, they are 26-19 for the season. Eduardo Tait was 6 for 10 (.600) and had a three hit game on Thursday coming off a stong June for which he was named the Florida Complex League player of the month.  Starlyn Caba had four hits in Friday’s game and walked five times during the week (.450 OBP).  Jerffson Pena was 6 for 13 (.462) and Alirio Ferrebus was 5 for 16 (.313).  RHP Josbel Garcia pitched five and two thirds innings in a win over the Blue Jays Thursday allowing just one run while RHP Alexis De La Cruz retired all ten batters he faced to close out the game. RHP Pedro Reyes pitched 3.1 scoreless innings on Saturday.   Outfielder Yemal Flores and pitcher Danyony Pulido were promoted to Clearwater.

Dominican Summer League  :

Phillies Red was 1-3 for the week, 7-17 overall.  For Team Red left hander Zuher Yousuf pitched four scoreless innings in relief on Friday allowing just two hits.  Infielder Meylin De Leon was 4 for 13 with two walks (.438 OBP).

Phillies White was also 2-2 during the week, 9-15 overall.  Two left handed relievers had strong outings for Team White - Jorge Guzman threw three and a third scoreless frames on Monday striking out five batters and Eduardo Fernandez pitched two and two thirds scoreless innings on Thursday allowing just one hit.  Right hander Richard Reyes threw three scoreless frames Friday behind right handed starter Eduardo Robles who went six innings allowing two runs.  RHP Julio Polanco pitched six innings on Saturday allowing two runs.  Sixteen year old shortstop Jose Familia hit his first professional home run in Friday’s game.

Left handed pitcher Elicier Bata and Catcher Brahian Silva were promoted from the DSL to the FCL.

Injury Updates (rehab group at the complex) :

Multiple  players continue to work towards returning to game action at the complex under the guidance of the rehab team.

RHP Christian McGowan began his game rehab efforts by throwing an inning for the FCL Phillies Friday.  Outfielder Gabriel Rincones Jr also returned to game action on rehab assignment in the FCL contests both Friday and Saturday.

RHP Dominic Pipkin was returned to regular roster status from the 60 day IL with Reading while RHP Cam Brown was officially placed on the 60 day IL as was infielder Rodolfo Castro (Note that Castro was placed on the minor league 60 man IL and not the major league 60 day IL - he still occupies an active spot on the major league 40 man - there is a provision in the CBA that if a 40 man roster player is injured while playing in the minors they are eligible to be placed on the minor league IL’s instead of the major league IL’s).

RHP Alex Garbrick threw two more live BP sessions while right hander Andrew Painter continues his progression as he threw two limited side sessions on Tuesday and Friday.  Both RHP Guissepe Velasquez and RHP Alex McFarlane continued introductory mound efforts with two limited side sessions this week and RHP’s Chuck King and Dylan Covey had initial mound sessions with scaled back effort.

Happy Day, Happy Baseball ⚾️
