An inside look at the Phillies top prospects.
(MLBPipeline lists the top 30 prospects on each team’s website. While biding time waiting for baseball to resume, Steve Potter will provide his views of these young players. INF Nick Maton
Phillies #12 prospect according to MLB.com … 23 years old … 2017 7th round selection out of Lincoln Land Community College
Nick made a good impression this spring in big league camp appearing in 14 games knocking a home run and driving in 7 runs. He’s a left handed hitter and has a Chase Utley like swing ... short and quick, very good bat speed, the ball jumps on contact ... a solid hitter with an excellent eye and approach.
Defensively Nick has primarily played shortstop but we’ve also seen him at second base and a little bit at third. He’s a very steady fielder that is baseball smart with his decisions.
Projection : Nick has an overall skill set that certainly projects him as a major leaguer. His offensive approach and defensive versatility puts him in a good position for utility use, to date in the minors he’s been a everyday player ... akin to what MLB said I can see that for him as a major leaguer as well perhaps playing multiple positions in doing so.
